Once a upon a time there was a girl betrayed and murdered by the people she taught was her neighbors, in the same place where she was born and abandoned by the person who vowed to protect her no matter what. Her eyes bled as the first soil rained into her pale skin. Her once brown beautiful eyes changed into the color of her blood as she cried and pleaded to the man she loved to save her. She laid there in her grave as she stared at the light from the surface diminished and the sound of silence started to echo in the tomb she shared with her beloved mother and father. By then, even when she is about to breathe the last bit of air inside her darkened grave, her heart never stops yelling for vengeance and even when she is about to succumb to death, the deafening cry of her vengeful heart never seize to pound her weakened chest.
Four hundred years had already passed and the world has already changed yet her vengeful heart never even once stopped crying for revenge, it might have already calmed down but its tears never seized flowing from its veins.
This is the story of Enma Ai before she was turned into Hell Girl. The once beautiful young innocent girl is now at the fore front of ferrying souls into the depths of Hell.
But even if she already buried the souls of those who sentenced her to death into the core of the underworld, her howl for vengeance still echoed inside her until she secured that everyone of those who caused her pain and robbed her of very own life is ferried into hell.
However, this girl of whom was made immortal by the Hell God and was able to linger here in on Earth for more than four hundred years never did once saw in her very own eyes the true form of forgiveness. She might have known its shadows but she was unable to see what is it was like to forgive.
After her emotions took over her and she was able to break free from the grave her own villagers made for her in the foot of the temple, she didn’t waste time in burning down each house that cause her to suffer. She didn’t hesitated in obliterating all the villagers that had forsaken her. As the moon shines at the empty sky, she danced in insanity as each house got caught in her flames, imprisoning those sleeping inside it, making their home their own grave as well. It may sound ironic but the girl they just buried alive in the grave they dug themselves is now the one burning them in their own grave conjured by her own flames.
Nevertheless, even if she was at the forefront of avenging suffering souls and revenge for her is all that matters, when the light of forgiveness finally made its apparition to her, she truly understood it even at first glimpse. She immediately realized the hidden beauty of forgiveness compared to the instant comforts of revenge.
But through it all, when she saw what is was like to forgive, she let go of everything that burdened her and for once she soared in the petals of the cherry blossom tree. She realized that she is trying to escape in a prison cell where the door was never locked. She made her own self suffer in the thought of escape in the prison she, herself made. She exhausted everything she had looking for a way to get out when door was never closed in the first place.
These, my friends, are the truth of forgiveness and revenge. When we seek someone to suffer as much as we did, we unknowingly and painstakingly cut our own wings with our bare hands in the thought that we could never fly again. Revenge will always be sweet but it will always have its bitter side of that will last much longer than the sweetness that it promised. Forgiveness on the other hand, is like climbing a mountain, getting to the top requires sweat and determination yet the splendor and fortune it offers is something that will last for all eternity. The price we get when we forgive far exceeds the capital
we use to achieve it.
Those who plot the destruction of others often perish in the attempt.

Wanyudo
He is the first of Ai's allies. He appears to be the old man whose eyes remains shut. He also wears a traditional yukata with a long sleeved haori. In the first season of hell girl he is always used as the black straw doll given to the clients. He regularly also takes the form of the coach with a burning wheel that takes Ai whenever she goes to human world to claim a soul.
Wanyudo's name is taken from the "yokai" of the same name which means "A wheel entering the road". Actually, Wanyudo is a princess' entourage carriage that has fallen into a cliff, it got caught into a fire and all its passengers that time were killed. As a result he became a flaming wheel-formed yokai terrorizing people with his own enlarge face showing off as a hubcap.
Eventually, he met Ai and she invited him to join her as her first companion. He revealed to Ai his ability to shape shift.
Ren Ichimoku
Ren is Ai's second recruit to be her companion, he appears to be the handsome young man who has her hair covering his right eye. He has the ability to project his eyes anywhere he wants which is useful when they are tracking their client. He also has this ability to let out a very bright light in his eyes when he is fighting that could easily blind or weaken his opponent.
Ren is actually a "tsukumogami", a type of spirit that came from an artefact which has been used or existed for a long time already. Ren is actually a katana, Ai found him near a rock after his owner got slain in a battle.
Hone Onna
Onna is the third and the female companion of Enma Ai. She takes the form of a beautiful and stunning woman wearing a blue kimono. Onna and Ren usually are the ones who investigate the clients because they can easily blend with normal humans.
Honna Onna means "bony woman", which is also one of her special ability to show off some of the bones in her body which is used to scare off their victims. She can also use her bones to inflict pains in their victims.
Onna's real name is Tsuyu, a geisha who was murdered by a yakuza and thrown into the river where she became a yokai named Hone Onna. Her story started out when the first man she loved betrayed her and sold her to bothrel in order to get money to pay his debt. After that her friend a fellow geisha betrayed her again which lead to her murder as well as the assassination of the man she loved in the hands of a yakuza.

Hell correspondence is currently a website in the internet that could only be accessed at exactly 12midnight by someone who deeply wants revenged. Here you will able to type the name of the person whom you want to get retribution. Right after clicking send, hell girl will show herself to you bringing with her a straw doll with a scarlet thread around its neck. You will enter into the covenant the moment you will untie the thread in the doll’s neck.
The covenant that you will be making with hell girl actually has 2 holes. One is that once you untie the red thread in the straw doll, she will exalt vengeance in your behalf by ferrying the soul of the one you typed in the website right into the depths of hell for all eternity. However, the second hole is the biggest consequence of them all. The moment you will untie the red thread in the straw doll, she will not only avenged you but you will also go straight to hell as payment of what you did the moment you will die. By then a mark will appear in your chest as a sign of your fate after you your death. And you will not also be exempted when someone will want vengeance from you.
Actually, the hell correspondence has been around for hundreds of years. It evolves as the world changes. First it was only an ad in the newspaper that can only be read by those who truly wants revenge. Then it became a website when the internet was made available to the people.

Ai Enma is the protagonist or leading character of this anime series yet she is also the anti-heroine. She is the girl with a long, straight, jet black hair and her eyes has the color of the finest rubies. She usually wears a seifoku or a black with white sailor collar uniform. However, when is out on a mission she always wear a black kimono with floral designs.
Ai is the one called Hell Girl, she is also the captain of the Hell correspondence team which can only be reached on the internet at midnight. Her ability to ferry souls in the depths of Hell and conjure vivid and realistic illusion that could wear down any target made her the best suited for this job. She became hell girl when she avenged herself from the villagers who sentenced her with sacrificial execution, as part of the village's tradition. Her eyes changed from deep brown, into crimson red when the first shovel of soil was thrown in her face as they buried her alive. Right after she broke out of her grave, she burned her village to the ground, along with the residence of the place she came from; the people who took her life away. 
Being Hell Girl was given to her by the God of Hell not as something as prize but a punishment of the crime she did. The Hell God changed her name into Enma Ai and the God also demanded from from her that she locks away all her personal hatred and emotions so she could perform her duties well. The Hell God gave Ai her immortal form. Enma Ai, accepted all of this from the Hell God just so her love ones will be liberated from hell and be able to enter Heaven. Therefore,this is a kind of a martyr sacrifice from someone who ferries soul into hell.
Right now, Ai lives with her grandmother in the shores of Hell; a place forever frozen in time as it basks in an eternal sunset. They live in a small hut with an old computer inside where she receives messages in Hell Correspondence.
Despite Ai's apathetic and deathly expression, she still has some feelings left, just waiting patiently in her sealed heart.
